ABOUT THE DEEP FILES

Investigations • Documents • Evidence

THE DEEP FILES is an independent investigative journalism and research platform based in the Netherlands, built around a simple principle:

Follow the evidence. Examine the documents. Ask the questions that remain unanswered.

We investigate matters of public interest involving corporations, institutions, technology, artificial intelligence, healthcare, finance, public policy, major investments, influential individuals, and other subjects where deeper examination may contribute to public understanding.

Our purpose is not to begin with a predetermined conclusion.

Our purpose is to investigate.

What We Do

THE DEEP FILES conducts evidence-based investigations using publicly available information, original documents, regulatory records, court materials, corporate disclosures, scientific publications, archived information, correspondence, interviews, direct testing, and other verifiable sources.

Our work may include:

  • Investigative journalism;
  • Document-based investigations;
  • Corporate and institutional research;
  • Timeline reconstruction;
  • Analysis of public records and regulatory materials;
  • Examination of conflicting statements and evidence;
  • AI safety and accountability investigations;
  • Right-of-reply correspondence;
  • Open-source intelligence and research;
  • Evidence preservation and documentation; and
  • Long-form investigative reports.

Some investigations begin with a simple inconsistency.

Others begin with a document, a corporate transaction, a public statement, a court case, a regulatory decision, or a question that has never received a satisfactory answer.

We follow the evidence wherever it leads.

Evidence Before Conclusions

THE DEEP FILES distinguishes between:

Documented facts — information supported by identifiable evidence.

Allegations and claims — statements made by individuals, organizations, litigants, authorities, or other sources that have not necessarily been independently established.

Analysis — our examination of documented information, relationships, timelines, inconsistencies, and available evidence.

Questions — matters where the available evidence does not justify a definitive conclusion but may justify further investigation.

We do not consider the existence of an investigation, allegation, lawsuit, regulatory inquiry, or unanswered question to be proof of wrongdoing.

When the evidence does not establish an answer, we say so.

Documents Matter

Original documents are central to our work.

Whenever legally and practically possible, THE DEEP FILES seeks to allow readers to understand the evidence behind an investigation rather than asking them simply to accept our interpretation of it.

Court records, regulatory documents, corporate filings, scientific papers, correspondence, archived materials, recordings, and other primary sources may therefore form an important part of our reporting.

Our objective is not merely to tell readers what we found.

It is to show them why it matters and what the evidence actually supports.

Right of Reply

Fairness is an essential part of serious investigative journalism.

Where appropriate, individuals, companies, institutions, or organizations materially involved in an investigation may be contacted before publication and given an opportunity to answer questions, provide documents, challenge information, or present their position.

A response does not automatically end an investigation.

A failure to respond does not automatically establish wrongdoing.

Relevant responses are assessed alongside the other available evidence.

Independent by Design

THE DEEP FILES is built as an independent investigative platform.

Our editorial conclusions are not determined by governments, corporations, political parties, advertisers, subjects of investigations, or technology providers.

Advertising, partnerships, funding, or other commercial relationships should not provide a third party with authority over the findings of an investigation.

Where a relationship creates a material potential conflict of interest relevant to a publication, appropriate disclosure may be provided.

Artificial Intelligence

THE DEEP FILES uses artificial intelligence as a research and editorial support technology.

AI may assist with language improvement, translation, organization, transcription, document comparison, research workflows, and analysis of large amounts of information.

But AI is not treated as an authoritative source of evidence.

AI assistance is not evidence.
AI output is not automatically fact.
AI capability is not editorial authority.

Evidence, verification, editorial judgment, and publication decisions remain subject to human review.

Our detailed approach is explained in our AI Disclosure.

Corrections and Developing Investigations

Investigative journalism does not always end when an article is published.

New documents may emerge. Companies may respond. Courts may issue decisions. Regulators may publish findings. New evidence may contradict earlier information.

When significant new information becomes available, THE DEEP FILES may update, clarify, correct, expand, or continue an investigation.

Where a material factual error is demonstrated, we aim to correct it transparently.

Global Perspective

THE DEEP FILES is based in The Hague, Netherlands, but our investigations are not limited to one country or region.

Companies, capital, technology, political decisions, scientific developments, and institutional relationships increasingly cross national borders.

Our investigations may therefore examine evidence across multiple jurisdictions and consider relevant European, American, Asian, Middle Eastern, and international sources where appropriate.

Our Standard

We do not ask readers to trust a conclusion simply because THE DEEP FILES published it.

We encourage readers to examine the documents, consider the responses, review the sources, distinguish established facts from allegations and analysis, and reach their own conclusions.

That principle is reflected in our name:

THE DEEP FILES

Investigations • Documents • Evidence

Go beyond the headline.

Follow the documents.

Examine the evidence.

Ask what remains unanswered.
